Is it worth commuting from Long Island into Manhattan....?

I just graduated from college and I might apply for a temp job at a law firm in the city....if I do, I would have to commute via mass transit and it would take me about 1hr and 40min....but they are only paying 12 dollars an hour (not cool)....my parents want to to do it, for networking and getting my foot in the door so to speak...what are your thoughts??
